30 Days Rules and Grace Period
Work and Travel Students, with J1 visa, are allowed to travel for 30 days after the end date on the DS-2019 form.
Although you have right to travel around the USA during Grace Period legally , you are not allowed to work in grace period. It s illegal.
The rules of Summer Work and Travel USA program might be different according to the countries. So you should check the US Consulate or Embassy web sites of the city you apply for WAT J1 visa in order to see how many days you can travelin grace period and the latest work permit date.
The important point that you must not forget is students are not allowed to work after the end date on the DS 2019.
The j1 visa deadline can not be extended, so do not demand for extention.
