The Department of Fish and Game predicts fishermen will have the 11th-largest harvest in Alaska history in summer 2009 .

The department published its 2009 Alaska salmon forecast . It predicts a total harvest of almost 175 million salmon. It is an increase of about 30 million fish from last year. ( almost 20% )

The forecast give good news for pink salmon fishermen especially in Southeast ( Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg, Sitka , Craig , Klowack )  and Prince William Sound, but it might be a tough year for Yukon River chinook (king salmon ) fishermen.
The director of the commercial fisheries division John Hilsinger said “We do have any concerns , for example, the chinook  run on the Yukon River,” . “We expect that to be poor and we are making management plans to try to make sure people can harvest the other species and still protect the king salmon and still provide for subsistence.”

Bristol Bay might see another healthy run of sockeye ( red salmon or sox ). Approximately 24 million are predicted to be harvested. That’s less than 2008’s catch . In 2008 ,28 million has ben caught .
